Saint Peter Religious Ed Statement

The volunteers of the Religious Education Program are Catholic Christians committed to sharing their faith with the adults and children of our parish community. Through the various Religious Education Programs, they help others hear the message of Jesus Christ in a parish setting with Christians who worship and serve together as they lovingly respond to God’s call and their life-long relationship to Christ and the Church.

If you need information or wish to volunteer for a program, call 440-282-9337.

The goals of the Religious Education Program are:

  • To build upon the faith nurtured by parish families and celebrated in baptism
  • To provide religious formation consistent with the basic traditions and teaching of the Catholic Church
  • To create opportunities to experience the rich sacramental life of the church
  • To develop a sense of belonging to a parish, local, and world community
  • To empower adults in their roles as “religious educators”

Sunday Preschool

The Sunday Preschool Program assists parents in making their young children aware of God and provides an atmosphere of church for children at their level while freeing parents to worship at the Sunday Liturgy. It is designed to be a readiness experience for the more formal religious education children will receive in years to follow.

  • Children must be 3, or 4 years old by September 30 to be admitted into the program

Curriculum

  • Catechesis of the Good Shepherds is incorporated into the "Seeds Program" as three and four year-olds spend time in a small atrium enjoying the presence of God.

Director of Religious Education: Sr. Rosemary Janezic

Coordinator: Krystine Cherney

Catechists: Laurie Dovala, Carol Hayward, Tina Meade, Dina Badr

Textbook: "Seeds Program" by PFlaum, "Good Shephard"

Calendar

Classes are held on Sundays starting September 23, 2007 and ending April 27, 2008, except Sundays during Christmas Vacation and Easter Sunday, from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Sacraments

NEW SACRAMENTAL POLICIES: Religious instruction in both Grades One and Two is required for First Communicants, and religious instruction in both Grades Seven and Eight is required for Confirmation Candidates. The completion of absent assignments and Sunday Mass attendance is also required. Students will return to the regular PSR sessions after the reception of the sacraments.

Preparation for the sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) are separate, parish-centered programs normally associated with readiness at a particular grade level, though the reception of the sacraments is optional and requires a purposeful decision to enter the program.

BAPTISM

Children who were not baptized as infants enter the Catechumenate, a process that prepares children over the age of seven to become members of the Catholic Church. When a child is ready to be baptized, the parish deacon, who coordinates the Baptismal Program, is contacted and a date for the child’s baptism is arranged.

EUCHARIST

Ordinarily, Second Graders prepare for First Communion because the catechesis for Reconciliation and Eucharist is presented in the "Christ Our Life Series" at their grade level. Older children are placed at their grade level in the Program, but also participate in the Catechumenate Program of ten extra sessions. If parents perceive a lack of readiness in their child, they may defer the celebration of these sacraments.

Communal Celebrations of First Reconciliation are held two Saturdays in February. Group Communion is scheduled for the first Sunday in May and Family Communions are celebrated at weekend Masses after Easter usually beginning the last weekend of April.

The Day School and PSR Catechists are Carol Hayward, Sister Rosemary Janezic, Anne Petkosek, and Monica Cicerrella.
